Amethyst was a cardinal gem until Brazilian deposits made it common in the 1800s, and the price collapsed. What did not change is the colour — a deep reddish purple that most other stones cannot reach at any price.
Dusk uses a cushion cut with a deep pavilion, which is what keeps the colour from washing out at the edges. Under low light the stone reads nearly black; turn it toward a window and the purple opens up.
