A bypass ring does not close. The two ends pass each other at the top of the finger with a deliberate gap, which makes the ring adjustable by a half size in either direction and gives it a line that a closed band cannot.
Both ends are pavé-set and tapered to a point, so the gap reads as intentional rather than as a break. The open form also means it slips on past a swollen knuckle on a hot day.
